The United States Embassy in Riyadh has issued an urgent security alert, advising all American citizens currently in Saudi Arabia to depart the country immediately via commercial flights. The warning comes as the security situation in the Middle East deteriorates rapidly following the escalation of conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the U.S.

Priority on Citizen Safety In a series of updates culminating on Sunday (March 15), the Embassy emphasized that the safety of U.S. citizens is the “highest priority” for President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the entire Department of State.

“We are monitoring the situation in the Middle East closely,” the Embassy stated. “American citizens should strongly consider departing on commercial flights while they are still operational.”

Key Advisory Details The security alert outlines several critical measures for those currently in the Kingdom:

Departure Options: Commercial flights are still operating out of Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam, though travelers are warned of significant cancellations and prolonged delays due to air traffic restrictions.

Shelter-in-Place: For those choosing not to depart, the Embassy has directed a “shelter-in-place” status. Citizens are advised to remain in secure locations, stay away from windows, and maintain a supply of food, water, and essential medications.

Government Personnel: On March 8, the State Department officially ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members from the Kingdom.

Threat of Missile and Drone Attacks The alert follows sustained threats from Iranian drone and missile targeting, as well as the risk of armed conflict spreading across Saudi borders. The Embassy warned that hotels and other locations where Westerners gather could be potential targets for retaliatory attacks.

U.S. citizens have also been urged to:
Vigilance: Maintain a low profile and avoid all protests or large demonstrations.

Travel Documents: Ensure passports and travel documents are up-to-date and easily accessible.

Crisis Intake: Complete the State Department’s crisis intake form to receive timely updates and assistance.

Regional Impact The mass departure advisory highlights the severity of the current geopolitical crisis. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively blocked and active combat occurring across multiple fronts, the U.S. is taking preemptive steps to ensure its citizens are not caught in the crossfire of a widening regional war.
