A Legacy of Devotion: Sheikh Al-Sudais Completes 36th Consecutive Quran Recitation at Masjid al-Haram

In a historic moment of spiritual significance, Sheikh Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, the General President of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, completed the recitation of the Holy Quran (Khatam-al-Quran) during the Taraweeh prayers at Masjid al-Haram on Tuesday (March 17).

The completion marks a staggering 36 consecutive years that Sheikh Al-Sudais has led the full Quranic recitation during the holy month of Ramadan at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

A Record-Breaking Tenure

Sheikh Al-Sudais, renowned globally for his rhythmic and soulful recitation, has been a pillar of the Grand Mosque for 43 years, having joined the imamate in 1984.

Youngest Imam: Appointed by a royal decree from the late King Fahd bin Abdulaziz in May 1984, he became the youngest Imam in the history of Masjid al-Haram at just 22 years old.

Leadership: In 2012, his dedication was further recognized when he was appointed as the head of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.

Academic and Spiritual Journey

Born in 1960 in the Al-Qassim region of Saudi Arabia, the Sheikh’s journey with the Quran began early; he memorized the entire holy book by the age of 12.

Higher Education: He earned his Master’s degree from Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in 1987 and later completed his PhD from Umm al-Qura University in Makkah in 1995.

Global Recognition: For his immense contributions to the Islamic world, he was honored as the “Islamic Personality of the Year” by the Dubai International Holy Quran Award in 1995.

A Global Gathering

As has been the tradition for decades, millions of worshippers are expected to gather at the Grand Mosque to participate in the final Dua (supplication) led by Sheikh Al-Sudais following the completion of the Quran. His emotional prayers, often focused on global peace and the well-being of the Ummah, remain a highlight of the Ramadan experience for Muslims worldwide.
